What’s the Compensation of an Association Professional?

CSAE recently released the 2016 edition of the CSAE Benefits and Compensation Report, which provides comprehensive documentation of compensation and benefits currently provided to staff employed in associations and other not-for-profit organizations across Canada.

Here are my top 10 tidbits gleaned from the executive summary that was recently shared in CSAE’s LinkedIn Group. (By the way, if you haven’t joined the group, you’re missing out. There are lots of great conversations taking place every day.)

  • A majority of association staff have seen increases in compensation in the last 12 months, and many more are anticipating increases in the coming 12 months.
  • The majority of compensation increases are less than three per cent. 
  • Average cash compensation for CEOs increased by 4.4 per cent in 2016. 
  • CEO compensation has increased an average of 2.7 per cent per annum for the last 10 years. Cumulative growth since 2007 sits at 23 per cent.
  • Ninety-four percent of CEOs receive fringe benefits, while 81 per cent of support staff receive fringe benefits. Laptop computers and professional development are among the top five fringe benefits received.
  • Compensation tends to be highest in national associations.
  • Being located in a city of 500,000 or more has a net positive impact on compensation. CEOs earn significantly more when based in Toronto, but Alberta pays the highest in compensation for its support staff. 
  • The jump from a college degree to a bachelor’s degree adds and an extra five to eight per cent in compensation.
  • There appears to be some work to be done on the wage gap between genders at the executive levels. The gap is the widest for CEOs, where male compensation is 28 per cent more than female compensation. 
  • Females represent just over half of staff at the CEO and executive levels, in comparison to more than three quarters at the support staff level.
